Craig Cunico, Deacon
Craig was born in Albuquerque in February, 1968, a native to New Mexico. In 1986 he graduated from West Mesa High School and went on to get his associates degree in mechanical engineering at the Albuquerque Technical Vocational Institute. In 1990, he married his high school sweetheart, Heather Bray, whom he met during a summer school session. However, Craig had no religious background and Heather herself had cooled in her relationship with God. The marriage was soon struggling.
To Heather, it was clear that she needed to return to the Lord and she began attending church services again. She asked Craig to go too. He did eventually, but very reluctantly, and God began working in Craig’s heart. One night he found himself outside looking at the stars. That night they seemed strikingly beautiful and while gazing, he suddenly felt engulfed in God’s presence and love. It was exciting! But this was more than just a rush. There was something real and spiritual here and Craig was affected very deeply. He cautiously began to seek out the Lord. Craig was a newcomer to this Christian stuff and he had questions. Do Christians really live what they believe? How does a child of God live? He decided to keep his change of heart a secret, even from Heather, and to observe.
One day Craig announced to Heather that he needed to talk with her. It sounded serious, and she listened anxiously. To her joy, Craig told her that he had accepted Christ as his personal savior and friend and was excited to start his new life. Both were baptized in 1997 at Calvary Chapel in Rio Rancho. A happy family moved to Los Alamos in 1998, after Craig accepted a position at LANL. They joined Christ Community Bible Church, which is now Crossroads today. When Craig was asked to be a deacon, he took the offer very seriously and spent much time in prayer before accepting. Craig sees the deaconate as a service to the church and opportunity to strengthen those who are struggling with their faith. Craig views the primary concern for a deacon is the spiritual health of each member in the church body and that his responsibility is to remove any physical obstacles which might interfere with one’s faith in Christ. |
